I really like this guy, he just moved and is dealing with his mom dying, I've given time, and he hasn't called?

I lost my mom 7 years ago now, so I know how he feels. how do I know he likes me or not? It's been 4 days, but about a week or so since we talked last. Right now, he's not even talking to his close friend either. Last time we did chit chat, I messaged him about 6-9 times after the conversation and I am afraid I ruined it by looking too desperate. I haven't messaged him for 4 days now and he hasn't contacted me yet. How much longer do I wait for him to call or should I be call or text him to let him know I want to see him again?
