How can I fit in at a party I will be going by myself to?

I am already shy but on top of it am going to a formal party - tail reception followed by dinner - all by myself. I am scared nobody will talk to me, everyone will be with couples and I'll be the odd one standing nervously and awkwardly with nobody to talk to. Please help, it's work related so I have to go :(
