Urgent help on photo essays need, thanks.?

I've just recieved a project to complete from my teacher. Im suppose to complete a photo essay on poverty, like the causes and consequences and how can we eradicate poverty. Im new to photo essays so i really need some advice on how to start and which software to use, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
